How long do I have to get a car inspected after buying it?
Seven days from the date of sale. If it fails, the station applies an R sticker listing what must be fixed, and you get one free re-inspection once the work is done. The part almost nobody explains is what else those seven days are for: a failed inspection inside that window can let you void the sale entirely under the Massachusetts Lemon Aid law, M.G.L. c.90 §7N, if the repairs would cost more than 10% of what you paid and you tell the seller within 14 days.

What happens if the car fails the inspection?

What does the 7-day rule actually require?
That the vehicle is inspected within seven days of the sale. The clock starts at the sale, not at registration and not when the plates arrive, which is why a car sitting on a driveway waiting for insurance paperwork can quietly run out of days. Any licensed inspection station in Massachusetts can do it.
A pass gets the sticker and the matter is closed. A failure gets an R sticker — the rejection sticker — which names the items that caused the failure. Repair those items and you are entitled to one free re-inspection rather than paying a second full fee. We are not printing a price for the inspection here, because the figure we could find was not verifiable at source; the station will quote you the state's amount, and it is the same amount everywhere.

Why the inspection deadline is also a legal deadline
Massachusetts has a provision, M.G.L. c.90 §7N, commonly called the Lemon Aid law. It is not a repair obligation. It is an exit: under it, a buyer may void the sale and recover the purchase price when a vehicle fails a state safety inspection within 7 days of the sale and the cost of repairing it to pass exceeds 10% of the purchase price. The buyer has to notify the seller within 14 days.
Read those two rules together and the practical consequence is obvious, which is what makes it strange that so little is written about it. The inspection is what produces the evidence the Lemon Aid provision runs on. Inspect the car on day two and, if something serious is wrong, you have a documented failure inside the window and twelve days left to give notice. Inspect it on day nine and you have missed both the inspection deadline and the only proof that would have supported voiding the sale.
The three numbers to hold on to
- 7 days — the deadline to have the vehicle inspected, and the window in which a failure can support voiding the sale.
- 10% — the share of the purchase price the repair cost has to exceed for §7N to be available.
- 14 days — the deadline to notify the seller. Miss it and the right lapses even if everything else lines up.
Keep the paperwork. The rejection report, the repair estimate and the dated notice to the seller are the whole case, and none of them can be reconstructed afterwards.

Which law applies to my problem?
Something broke, and it impairs the car
That is the used-vehicle warranty, §7N¼. The dealer repairs it. The term is set by the odometer reading at the time of sale, and a refund arrives only after three failed repair attempts on the same defect or more than ten cumulative business days out of service. It failed inspection almost immediately
That is Lemon Aid, §7N, and it is about undoing the purchase rather than fixing the car. Failure within 7 days, repair cost above 10% of the price, notice within 14 days. Different section, different remedy, different deadlines.
